Thesis
Essays on urban spatial inequalities and job search behaviours

Supervisor
Florence Goffette-Nagot

The major motivation of this research project lies in the existence of strong differences in unemployment rates across neighbourhoods of cities. In France, for instance, deprived neighbourhoods face an unemployment rate two and a half time higher than in other areas.
The objective of my work is to understand whether there exist differences in job search behaviours (job search channels, search intensity, types of job targeted) between these neighbourhoods and others that would amplify initial inequalities related to individual characteristics and sorting. I draw on the neighbourhood effect literature and on job search models applied to the urban context. The aim of this work will be to take into account the role of social interactions with neighbours on job search behaviours, the role of physical barriers in job access, of lower housing costs and, in a more exploratory way, of living conditions. These issues are related to both housing policies in France and to urban renewal policies implemented in deprived neighbourhoods.
